Vintage Necklace
Hello!
Hope you all are having a happy Friday! I am enjoying my last few days of vacation. Polka Dot Skies will reopen soon, I promise!
Today, I'm wearing a colorful necklace that belonged to my spunky great-grandmother, Nannie. She always left home in a well put together outfit. I get compliments on this fun necklace every time I wear it and I'm always happy to say it belonged to Nannie. (Perhaps I'll be as stylish as she was one day!)
Do you have anything special that belonged to your grandmother or great-grandmother? Please leave a comment and tell us all about it! You can even send a photo to my email (ekillen@bellsouth.net) if you would like to be included in a blog post!
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

A Day with my Dad and a Red Gingham Kitchen
![]() |
Just like my childhood kitchen! |
Recently, I spent the best day with my dad. We drove up to Concord, NC and spent the morning strolling around the charming town. Shopped in antique stores. Found a great place for lunch. Found a chocolatier (we stopped there twice, yes we did)! Toured an old courthouse that has been turned into a theater and an art gallery. Such a fun day!
While we were browsing, I came across a fabulous find! An old play kitchen just like the one I adored when I was a little girl. I knew it instantly...the red gingham...the window over the sink...the little apple clock. It was like seeing a dear old friend again!
Well, this surely explains my love of gingham. Sadly, the little apple clock did not create an ability to keep track of time. I never wear a watch.
Do you have a favorite toy from your childhood? I'd love to know!

A Lovely Vintage Mirror
I just love this old mirror I found at our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The lovely lines and beautiful wood caught my eye right away. I quickly decided it was too pretty to leave behind and scooped it into my arms before another lucky customer spotted it! I'm not sure where it will "land" in our home, but for now, I'm enjoying it in our family room. Our vibrant green family room...don't be afraid...that's all about to change soon with a few gallons of paint!
Do you have a favorite vintage find? I'd love to know.

The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat
KittyCatsCupboard
RetroPuff
The gingham dog and the calico cat
Side by side on the table sat;
'Twas half-past twelve, and (what do you think!)
Nor one nor t' other had slept a wink!
The old Dutch clock and the Chinese plate
Appeared to know as sure as fate
There was going to be a terrible spat.
(I wasn't there; I simply state
What was told to me by the Chinese plate!)
The gingham dog went "bow-wow-wow!"
And the calico cat replied "Mee-ow!"
The air was littered, an hour or so,
With bits of gingham and calico,
While the old Dutch clock in the chimney-place
Up with its hands before its face,
For it always dreaded a family row!
(Never mind: I'm only telling you
What the old Dutch clock declares is true!)
The Chinese plate looked very blue,
And wailed, "Oh, dear! what shall we do!"
But the gingham dog and the calico cat
Wallowed this way and tumbled that,
Employing every tooth and claw
In the awfullest way you ever saw---
And, oh! how the gingham and calico flew!
(Don't fancy I exaggerate---
I got my news from the Chinese plate!)
Next morning where the two had sat
They found no trace of dog or cat;
And some folks think unto this day
That burglars stole that pair away!
But the truth about the cat and pup
Is this: they ate each other up!
Now what do you really think of that!
(The old Dutch clock it told me so,
And that is how I came to know.)
Do you have a favorite childhood poem? I'd love to know!
One of my very favorite poems! I loved listening to my mom read this when I was a little girl.

Vintage Metal Lunchboxes
Do you remember these? I do! They are actually mine (and my sister's). We carried our lunch to school in these cute lunchboxes. I found them at my parent's house and just had to give them a better home!
They now rest on top of my kitchen cabinets...I think they will start lots of fun conversations!
Did you have a metal lunchbox when you were little? I would love to know what kind! I've heard through the grapevine that my husband had an Incredible Hulk box and I'm truly hoping his mom has it safely stashed away somewhere!
